Good Night & Good Luck Mr. Feldstein

The biggest news in AV this week was the announcement that George Feldstein, founder of Crestron, was retiring as CEO of the automation and video giant. Randy Klein will be the new President and CEO, Dan Feldstein will become the company’s COO, and Fred Bargetzi will hold the title of CTO. So, here’s to you, Mr. Feldstein.
Founded in 1969, Crestron has been the beneficiary of George Feldstein’s tinkering personality. George started out fixing or repairing anything for anyone. His master’s degree is in electrical engineering from NYU. He still has a test lab where he is able to develop whatever device comes into his head. He holds a number of patents and has been one of the leaders in the AV industry for over 40 years. His foresight lead Crestron to dive into handling digital video. Seven years later they have Digital Media and have just introduced their 4K product line.
However, this is more than an homage to a man that I look up to and admire. I’ve met Mr. Feldstein a few times at InfoComm. He is energetic and enthusiastic about this industry. That enthusiasm is contagious. It is more about how he continues to look forward. A number of years ago he sounded the death knell for analog video. He had the foresight to see where the industry was going. Just as then, now he sees where his company needs to go and is putting into place a number of people into places they can succeed and take his company further. I have to say, it is a remarkable thing to take something you have created and lay it in another’s hands.
Randy Klein is no stranger to those who have experiences with Crestron. He is the foil to Mr. Feldstein’s jokes and jabs during the Crestron party at InfoComm. He also will continue where George left off. Dan Feldstein will be the new COO and, again, a great choice. George will remain the chairman and will probably still have his workshop to go to when he wants.
So, Mr. Feldstein. Thank you. From me, from the AV community, and the end users. For your wit, your ideas, and inventions. And for looking ahead.
