This weekend our rouge group of ruffians, Red Band Radio, headed out to do a podcast at a comic book shop. Not just any comic book shop, Jay and Silent Bob’s Secret Stash. As in, Kevin Smith’s comic book shop. Now, you may be asking yourself what does comic books have to do with AV. That’s a fair question. On the face of it, absolutely nothing. As a wider question, though, the two do have some intersecting similarities. I would also argue, there are geeks in both camps.
Both AV and comic books/geek culture have their share of convention shows. The comics and sci-fi lot tend to have more regional shows. The AV shows have booths with the latest technology and the stars are the companies themselves. There are lines for this booth and that. In the comic book world the booths are tables maned by famous, and not-so famous, artists who spend their time signing and creating customized artwork for the throngs that come there. In the end though, we all spend countless hours walking through a faceless convention hall looking for that next thing that will excite and amaze us.
We like to say in AV that we have been around for 75 years or so. If you look back at comics and science fiction, it has been around as long, or longer. The golden age of-*comic books were produced in the 1930’s with Superman. Since then various alien races, super-humans, and wealthy vigilantes have graced their pages. Science Fiction movies have been around even longer. They have their golden age as well. With the release of Star Wars Episode VII coming out this December, it is a new generation connecting the one from my childhood. AV has indeed evolved. Companies who began life creating shades now make screens or those who started out controlling lighting now do everything else.
I have met AV professionals who are incredible fans of one brand or another; to the point of disparaging their competitors. You have as well. Their dedication to their favorite brands is admirable and the companies count them among their most useful marketing tools. Same with sci-fi. There are those folks who still cannot believe that the show Firefly only lasted one season. If you talk to a Doctor Who fan, of which I am one, they will argue about which actor portrayed the Doctor the best. Even though it is as much about the actor as it is the show runner and writers of a particular season. You can get into a heated argument discussing Start Trek versus Star Wars. There are those who can name and debate the various artists and writers for Batman, Superman, X-Men, and Spider-Man. No one is right and everyone is all at the same time.
If you’ve never considered yourself a geek ask this question. Can you name a model number without really thinking about it? Do you have a preference on 232 send being pin 2 or 3? Have you ever debated the benefits of scaling versus native resolution? If so, you are an AV geek and that is alright. It’s a wonderful place to be when you are passionate about your work and your life. Just remember, there are those out there just like you who are as passionate and when we find each other it’s a great thing.
Thank you for taking the time to read my blog. Have a great week.
