The International Part of AV

As we all get back into our regular routines following ISE 2016 I wanted to take a few moments to share this one thought that has been rattling around in this old head of mine. That is, there’s a reason both InfoComm International and CEDIA have evolved into international organizations. That reason is there is a whole planet out there that does AV beyond North America. They do what you do on a daily and weekly basis, have the same struggles, and similar triumphs. These AV professionals are your brothers and sisters in industry.

Part of why we attend and cover ISE is to get the latest news on releases and new products. The other part is to connect with those in the industry who practice our craft in a different culture with separate languages, challenges, and solutions. Learning from them the last few years has been a real joy.

Before our trip I had the chance to chat with a couple of integrators in North America who do business on a global scale. They were sharing the obstacles they have overcome as well as the grand opportunities that still exist for the company willing to take the risk of stepping foot in a non-native country than their own. One was Tom Berry of Verrex. Verrex has achieved what they have through partnerships and people in-country where they can make the personal connections with their clients. AVI-SPL now has offices in the UK and it was just announced that Stampede is doing the same. Julian Phillips is part of the Global Presence Alliance; a group dedicated to helping companies like yours do business beyond their own borders.

InfoComm has shows in nearly every continent, several different languages, with separate education offerings separate from their English US-based ones. CEDIA as well have initiatives aimed at gathering those outside North America together. They see the benefit of reaching out and gathering all AV professionals together in one place. So do I.

If InfoComm’s numbers are correct, 2016 will mark the year that the Asia Pacific market surpasses the US market for AV. This is due to a number of factors. China is an emerging force in the world of AV. There are a number of installations going on currently that will be put online in the next 12 to 18 months. Their middle class is also growing. India, too, has a growing middle class. Couple that with the business-centric climate and you have a market that is poised to burst at the seams. I forgot to mention that both of these countries boast over 1 billion in population… each. In contrast the U.S. has approximately 334 million. As these markets continue to thrive we should offer our services, help, and expertise to our clients as well as our fellow AV professionals. We may not understand all of the cultural ins and outs but we can offer our expertise in how to design, install, and maintain a successful system.

We did a survey late last year asking you, our audience, what you would like to see from AVNation. One of the most popular responses was “AV Planet” or “AVNation Global”. The idea is that you get it as well. We are making strides to reach out. That is why we have some great partnerships with publications like Daily DOOH and AV Magazine. During ISE we made even more connections. As those bloom we’ll let you know what they are. Needless to say we here at AVNation are excited about the future of AV on a global level and hope are too.
