Why Underwriters?

Why Underwriters? It’s a question we get asked more and more. AVNation is an online publication. As such, we don’t have a physical magazine to offer to advertisers and supporters to place full page ads in. We could go the traditional advertising route. That would include figuring out a cost per thousand (CPM) model based on our 50,000 or so monthly audience. It would also force us to look at a number of shows that don’t quite “make the numbers” that others do. We have some pretty niche shows that delve into parts of AV that are important but not necessarily audience grabbers.

Then there is the issue of the way media has developed. Not only in this country but abroad. The people at Reporters Without Borders puts out a yearly list of the most “free press” in the world. It’s a mark of how much influence government and corporations have on the journalists in their country. The U.S. ranks 49th. 49th. Let that sink in a minute. We are behind countries such as Germany, France, South Africa, Canada, and the U.K.

My formal education is not in AV it’s in media studies. Still trying to finish that thesis so I can get my masters. While doing my studies I was exposed to countries like Norway, the U.K., and others who put content ahead of the finances. That idea stuck and it’s part of the foundation of AVNation. We don’t have ads because our content is agnostic and we like it that way. We think you do too. There is also the idea that the “separation of church and state” in media is passe. If you’re not familiar with this concept, it’s the idea that the business side and the editorial side of a publication stay separate. That too is deteriorating as seen in this John Oliver clip.

So, why underwriters? Those companies that support AVNation with their money are saying they believe in a free and open press in the world of AV. So much so that the want it to continue. Now, it has also come to my attentions that we have not done a great job explaining that this is how we are funding our enterprise. We are working on that. But I’m also asking for your help. If you are reading this that means you are part of a group that values what we do. If so, please pass along our unique business plan to others you think would be interested in joining ranks with us.

Thank you so much for your time, dedication, and commitment to our agnostic AV news approach. Have a great week.
