Processes to help you through your own growing pains

We are in the midst of some pretty interesting growing pains at AVNation. Not just, “oh, we need to do this different.” It’s along the lines of the pains Bruce Banner’s shirts go through when he changes into the Incredible Hulk. As an organization that began as a volunteer band of AV professionals, our “processes,” such as they are, grew organically. Now that needs to change a bit to become more efficient and serve our audience and our underwriters better.

The question for our team is how to do this while maintaining the agility that has attributed to our success. How do we retain the Wild West feel while evolving into a company that will be around for the long haul? The odd answer to that is processes.

Our main web architect, Bradford Benn, wrote a piece talking about the importance of processes. I’m going to dive a bit deeper into this and talk about ways you can be more efficient. Understanding that we are going through the same process alongside you.

  1. What needs to be done?
    Not to be simplistic, but what, exactly,  do you need to accomplish? Give yourself some time when you assign the process. Let’s take a trade show, for example. At least a month or two in advance you know you’ll be going. I can tell you the next three trade shows AVNation is covering. Give yourself some time to develop your plans for all aspects – creative, marketing, and social.
  2. Who needs to do it?
    As you assign tasks, figure out who should do it and who can. Who has the bandwidth to take on the task you are trying to accomplish? If they align perfectly, great! If not, see who else can adequately handle the job.
  3. When does it need to be completed?
    This piece is probably the most important. The deadline will dictate who is available when you assign it. Give your team plenty of time to accomplish your goals and tasks to give them a greater chance of success.

We are walking this alongside you as we figure out not only our teams but the ways in which we get things done. My hope is you will enjoy a level of success with these tips.
