Building Dragons and Your People

This is not a space I typically use for book reviews but I thought it was a good time to do so. Dan Newman has become a good friend of mine and of AVNation. He is one of a handful of people who provide business advice for the low cost of a cup of coffee or breakfast.
At InfoComm 2016 we gave away a number of copies of Dan’s new book, Building Dragons. He didn’t give them to us and he didn’t ask me to do this. However, while reading the book this week one idea struck me as something we can never talk about too much: people.
This book on the digital transition and creating a superstar company takes a break in chapter five where Dan and his co-author stop to discuss how, “people’s needs, not technology, are at the heart of a digital transformation.” The idea here is that with all the databases, calendars, notifications, and CRM services (customer relationship management), we should take care of people first.
Your first concern is your employees. What is it they need to be successful, feel appreciated, and to do their job with excellence? If the answer to that is a computer then go out and get the closest thing to their specs that you can afford. Sometimes they are looking for more freedom or latitude in completing their tasks. Allow them as much, and maybe a bit more, than you are comfortable with giving. It will pay off in the long run.
For your clients, what is it they need? Everyone wants to feel appreciated. Sending cards, both thank you and special occasion cards, are simple ways to stay connected. They may need some extra documentation to do business with you. Sometimes this is market research, and at times it might be extra presentations to a different group of influencers. Do it and you will win a champion in that organization and beyond.
Yes, technology is important and it helps us accomplish great things in our work and personal lives. It is not the answer to every one of your business problems, however. Take the time to stay connected to those around you and listen to what they need. Then, use the technology to help you achieve those goals.
