Off to Texas We Go

As I write this the AVNation team is gearing up to bring you CEDIA 2016. This annual residential AV trade show is being held in Dallas, Texas once again. We will begin our coverage on Wednesday. We already have a special CEDIA section on our website here.

The 3 Things to Look for at CEDIA 2016

Internet of Everything

This year will feature Amazon, Google, and other Internet-centric companies. The network in general, and Internet proper, has become increasingly important to the audio visual industry. Sonos partnering with Amazon as well as traditional AV control companies is a great indication that the network and IT are here in AV for the long run.

Voice Control

As I mentioned, Amazon will be at the show under the “Smart Home” category. They are listed as Amazon Alexa. If you aren’t familiar with Alexa you can read a few articles here about a week with their voice control assistant and here about the security concerns.
Voice control is indeed coming to the smart home. Which means eventually it will find its way in some form into the commercial market. This edition of the CEDIA Expo will bring the Residential AV market to head with what the consumer electronics side have been developing for the last few years. This is a glimpse into the future of a true smart home controlled by your voice.

Home Networking

The first two on this list makes this last one even more important. With IoT and Voice Control coming into their own, the home network is increasingly the centerpiece of your installation. No longer is it just a nice thing to have. Nor can you just run out to a box store and pick up a wireless router for $20 and it do the job.
You need to take the network seriously from the time of design on through commissioning. This is the backbone of your control system, your audio, your video, and your lighting. It used to be if the network went down the kids couldn’t watch their cat videos. No big deal. Now, without the network your out of commission.
The CEDIA Expo 2016 will be a great show. There will be booth tours, product announcements, and some great interviews. We will post all of our content here. But don’t just look for our stuff. There are a great group of other media outlets covering this show. Check their stuff out as well.
Thank you for taking the time to read my blog. Have a great week.
