Displays All Around
Many K-12 and higher education institutions have a variety of displays—projectors, LED displays, and video walls—located throughout their campuses. Digital displays have become the go-to way to provide information to faculty, staff, and students.
Picking the correct display, though, for content and location can be challenging. Let’s review a few key questions to consider when selecting displays.
What Will You Show?
Once you have decided that you absolutely need a display, how do you decide what content to display? There are two important questions to ask yourself: Who is your audience and where will this display be located?
Different departments offer different types of content and this will affect the display you use. Medical students need to see specific details when viewing x-rays and other images; they will need displays that have high brightness, contrast, and is DICOM compliant. Graphic arts students will need displays that accentuate colors and contrast. Business students will need displays that can show crisp, clear spreadsheets to compare data.
Displays used outside of the learning environment, such as hallways, lobbies, libraries, etc., could be used for wayfinding, emergency alerts, and promotion of activities like student body elections and sporting events. Cafeterias can use displays as menu boards.
Once you have determined what kind of content will be used in each application, you can then consider interactivity and display size.
Do You Need Interactive Displays?
You can use interactive displays for a variety of purposes. In the classroom, students can interact with each other whether they are all in the same room or at different campuses. In a lobby or hallway, interactive digital displays can provide wayfinding solutions such as office or classroom locations. Interactive digital displays can also let students provide feedback with quick polls and suggestion box applications.
Interactive displays are exciting, but before you decide on including interactivity, ask yourself how you would implement it and whether it would be used consistently.
Does The Display Size Matter?
Once you’ve picked the content and location, you can determine how big of a display you need. Flat panel displays can add to the aesthetic look of a room but are not always large enough if just one display is installed. Many traditional classrooms use projectors and projection screens to provide a large enough image for the students in the back of the classroom or lecture hall to easily view the content. However, many learning environments that include long-distance learning video conferencing with other campus locations will also include flat panel displays used as confidence monitors and to see the people on the other end of the call.
If your lobby is large and you want to create a lasting impression, you can choose to install a video wall that will welcome visitors. Or you can choose to have a couple of displays in the lobby and other displays located throughout the hallways to provide even more information.
Ultimately, the size of your display is extremely important because you want your viewers to be able to comfortably read the content you are providing, whether it is RSS feeds, short videos, text, pictures, or a combination of media.
