After your first year in business, people were probably asking you how it was going. Well, how was it going? Did you have everything figured out? How about by year two? Three maybe?
I sit here about a week away from our third trip to Integrated Systems Europe looking at the business of AVNation, and I am afraid.
Not scared of failing at this agnostic news and commentary vision we had five years ago. The audience for the podcasts has never been stronger. Like most business owners I would like to grow and expand. Right now I am the only member of AVNation who makes a living from our efforts. How do I change that, how do I grow this great thing we have without losing what makes us, us?
There are several things on the table to make this happen. We can raise the cost of becoming an AVNation Underwriter. That may prove to be counter-productive. Making more sales is sometimes the standard answer. Again, we want to be true to who we are; a collective of AV professionals who believes in an agnostic view of the audio visual news. Training, content creation, and speaking engagements, and other options have been floated. We’ll figure out I’m certain.
As you look at your revenue generation, how do you make the decision to change, or add to, what you are doing? What does that process look like for you and your company? Some integrators have shifted from selling just boxes where the margins have shrunk every year and toward selling services. Those decisions have come with training or hiring new talent, changing the focus of the sales team, and I’m certain a fair amount of fear.
If you are considering pivoting, I’m here to encourage you. The pivot may be the best thing for your company. If it isn’t, you’ve learned something, and you move along to the next item. We are in an industry that has gone through tectonic shifts the last ten or fifteen years. You don’t need me to tell you that. You are still here. You’re here because you have shifted and adjusted. I am encouraged by your ability to change and adapt. We will too.
