Libraries Use Garfield to Teach Cyber Safety

Clearwater, Fla. (June 22, 2017) – The Pinellas Public Library Cooperative (PPLC) has a new champion to help them educate their young members in cyber safety – Garfield. The PPLC has announced Safe and Secure Online as its official cyber safety program, including cyber safety lessons featuring cartoon cat icon Garfield.
The program is provided by the Center for Cyber Safety and Education and offers lessons for children, parent, and seniors. The Garfield materials include cartoons, comic books, posters, trading cards, and stickers and will tackle different cyber safety issues, including privacy, the dangers of posting online, online etiquette, cyberbullying, and more. The Center also offers non-Garfield resources for parents and seniors on social media, passwords, scams, online banking and basic computer protection.
Cheryl Morales, Executive Director for the PPLC, commented, “Cyber safety is a major issue for our community. We are so glad the Center is addressing it, and Safe and Secure Online is now available through every PPLC member library. Many of the libraries now offer seminars and trainings for Pinellas County residents of all ages.”
Patrick Craven, Center Director, said, “This program helps libraries continue to provide current and relevant information on important topics. It also provides them a great gateway to the community by acting as a cyber safety leader and advocate.”
Ms. Morales added, “Member libraries have been offering internet safety information for many years, but Safe and Secure Online is exceptional in that offers something new and fresh for all age groups. The Garfield materials cover relevant topics kids are facing today, and he’s a character that’s connected to our cultural life that kids and adults can identify with. We also have a large senior population in Pinellas County, and they’re being targeted all the time. Safe and Secure Online allows us to provide them with useful resources they need.”
