Heading to San Diego: CEDIA 2017

This week the residential side of the AVNation crew heads to San Diego, California for CEDIA 2017. We’ve been covering CEDIA almost since our inception. AVWeek Episode 7 was a wrap up of the show with panelists that attended. Over the last few years, the residential side of audio video has increasingly become important.
This is where IoT was born. It’s where voice control came into its own. CEDIA and the custom integration market is where they have been installing 4K TVs as soon as they were released. This segment is some of the most innovative and cutting edge. It is also one of the sources that drive the commercial market.
We then launched ResiWeek. That was an education for me at least. Yes, I had used the products, I thought I was prepared. I had a Nest thermostat, after all. Nope, I still learn every week what it is like for the great men and women who create some remarkable installations in people’s most sanctified spaces; their homes.
This year’s CEDIA will mark the last one run by the trade organization. CEDIA sold off the show to Emerald Exhibitions earlier this year. What will be telling is how the transition occurs. One would expect the Emerald team to be there signing up exhibitors for next year as well as introducing their existing client base to this show in the hopes of broadening their tent.
Josh.AI, Origin Acoustics, Screen Innovations, Control4, ihiji, and others have already started making announcements. If they are any indication, this show should hold some moves forward in not only the residential AV space but in the audio video industry overall. You have accelerated voice control, multi-room voice control using Alexa, shades, networking, and more. And it’s only the Monday before the show.
Our residential AV team will be interviewing manufacturers all over the show floor starting Thursday morning. The videos we do will go up that night, but it’s the west coast so you can grab them Friday morning. Stay tuned to AVNation, our CEDIA 2017 coverage page, and all the other shows we do to get in-depth analysis of what comes out of CEDIA 2017.
Thank you for reading my blog. Have a great week.
