4K Projector Allows Oregon Theater Company to Digitally Map Stage Sets and Drive Event Opportunities in New Theater and Multipurpose Venue

COSTA MESA, Calif. —  BenQ, an internationally renowned provider of visual display solutions, today announced that Bag&Baggage Productions (B&B) successfully completed the installation of the LK970 Blue Core 4K projector in the company’s new theater and multipurpose venue, The Vault, in Hillsboro, Oregon. The projector enables the theater company to project realistic set backgrounds; reduce the scale, expense, and labor of manual set designs and create a state-of-the-art digital projection laboratory and film festival for area digital content creators.
“As an evolving theater company, we took a hard look at how we could use projection technology to reimagine not just our space but our storytelling,” said Jim Ricks-White, technical director for Bag&Baggage. “The BenQ LK970 far surpassed our shoot out tests when we were weighing the options. We can project a wall-to-wall, ceiling-to-floor backdrop with blacks that are crisp, clean and truly black. Our scenes feel realistic, and whatever we’re projecting has incredible detail.”
In 2016, B&B sought out a new space after its former home, the Venetian Theater, was sold. The company bought and renovated a 5,000-square-foot former bank building that it named The Vault as a nod to the building’s history. It built out the space as a black-box-style theater with untreated pine walls and a flat floor. Utilizing the 4K high-res quality and the 5,000 ANSI-lumen brightness of the BenQ LK970 Blue Core laser projector, the walls of the performance space are transformed into a vast canvas with which the theater company can create an endless number of scenes and backdrops.
B&B also uses the projector for several other applications, including film series, banquets and special events, board meetings and its Cultural Innovation program, which recently earned the company a $50,000 grant to fund further projector purchases and create a state-of-the-art digital projection laboratory that allows area artists, students from throughout the state, animators, innovators and digital content producers to experiment with the technology.
Featuring BenQ’s innovative Blue Core laser technology with Texas Instruments’ latest DLP chip, the LK970 delivers a perfect picture with subtle details in pristine, true-to-life color performance that makes graphics and motion video pop. The industry-trusted chip is complemented by a dual color wheel specifically engineered to project rich, saturated color with superior accuracy that’s capable of meeting the hefty color and reliability requirements of venues such as The Vault as well as immersive public spaces, museums, retail stores, simulation setups and enterprise spaces where color performance is critical.
It also met the theater’s stringent installation requirements, guaranteeing reliable projection from any angle, including 360-degree rotation and portrait applications, and is capable of projection mapping onto ceiling, walls, floors and even angled signage. Additionally, the LK970 offers HDBaseT connectivity for uncompressed transmissions up to 100 meters. HDBaseT connectivity combines video, audio and device control signals from multiple sources including PCs, laptops, document cameras, Blu-rays and DVDs onto a single Cat-5 cable for seamless long-distance transmissions. The LK970 is compatible with Crestron, AMX and Extron control systems for convenient system integration with various third-party devices.
“We’re proud to be on stage with Bag&Baggage at its new theater,” said Bob Wudeck, senior director, business, education and Cinepro solutions at BenQ America Corp. “This installation is a shining example of the incredible quality, brightness and installation versatility of the LK970 projector.”
