Mandai Wildlife Group’s Night Safari has unveiled its latest attraction, the Pangolin Trail, a mesmerizing extension of the renowned Creatures of the Night trail. Comprising of several enclosures that showcase the natural habitats of nocturnal animals, the Pangolin Trail experience is enhanced by Martin architectural lighting fixtures, designed and deployed by lighting consultants, Light Collab.
The design brief called for a seamless integration of light and darkness to mimic the serene effect of moonlight, creating an environment where nocturnal animals would feel at ease while remaining active and visible to visitors. Light Collab worked closely with the Martin APAC team to implement a carefully curated lighting system using 27 fixtures from Martin’s Exterior Wash Family. These luminaires were strategically placed across the Pangolin Trail to achieve the desired illumination while maintaining the delicate balance of light and shadow critical for nocturnal species.
The project presented unique challenges, including customizing fixture colors to blend with the natural surroundings and ensuring durability against potential vandalism from curious animals, such as monkeys. The team successfully integrated the lighting controls with other luminaires to achieve the desired effects envisioned by Light Collab.
“In this special project, we were excited to work with darkness and the visitors’ adaptation and perception in a dimly lit space,” said Toh Yah Li, Consultant, Light Collab. “It was important to create a balance in such low levels of lighting to give visitors the opportunity to observe the animals behaving as they would in their natural habitats.”
The lighting design on the Pangolin Trail brings together several innovative features to create an unparalleled experience. Inspired by natural moonlight, the exhibits are bathed in specific color temperatures that simulate a soft, natural glow, encouraging nocturnal animals to exhibit their natural behaviors. Advanced preset lighting control systems create dynamic lighting scenes, promoting movement and interaction among the species. The sheltered walkway also features high color rendering spectrum and glare less RGBW spotlights, ensuring minimal lighting interference while providing an optimal viewing experience for visitors. Additionally, careful attention was given to blending colors to reduce multi-colored shadows from the RGBW fittings, enhancing the exhibits’ natural appearance.
“The Pangolin Trail at Singapore’s Night Safari exemplifies how technology and thoughtful design converge to create immersive experiences that respect and enhance natural habitats,” said Alvin Ang, Lighting Business Development, HARMAN Professional Solutions, APAC. “The ongoing investment HARMAN makes in developing Martin lighting fixtures has resulted in installations fixtures that are ideal for projects such as Pangolin Trail and other entertainment attractions.”
