Barix Adds SRT Support to LX400 Audio over IP Codec

Barix has upgraded its LX400 Audio over IP codec by adding SRT (Secure Reliable Transport) support, making it an even more powerful tool for live broadcast and production use. This gives users a third IP streaming option—alongside RTP and Reflector EVO—allowing near-zero latency and secure, reliable audio delivery over public networks. With SRT encoding now available (and decoding coming soon), broadcasters can use existing infrastructure to stream high-quality audio without extra investment in new tech.

Unveiled at NAB Show 2024, the LX400 retains Barix’s trusted features like contact closures, relays, USB playback, and codec options such as OPUS, AACplus, and PCM. It also supports end-to-end delay control, stream redundancy, and improved buffering for consistent streaming. Barix has similarly added SRT support to its MultiCoder M400 device, enabling secure multi-format audio encoding in one compact solution.

Barix has added SRT support to its LX400 broadcast-specific encoder/decoder solution, providing customers with a third IP transport option favored by many businesses serving the live broadcast and production community. Available soon via a board-level upgrade, the Barix LX400 Audio over IP codec now offers SRT support alongside Barix’s standard RTP-based STL firmware and Reflector Evo cloud networking service. Optional SRT encoding is now available, with optional SRT decoding to follow later this year.

Barix has added SRT connectivity to its LX400 Audio over IP codecs for customers seeking near-zero latency for live broadcast streams that require real-time AM, FM and/or online delivery. The SRT protocol is championed in the professional broadcast and production community for the secure, reliable delivery of low-latency audio and video streams across public IP networks.

“SRT’s open-source nature and multi-vendor interoperability also opens the LX400 to a broader customer base by allowing customers to freely use their existing technology to receive and decode SRT streams,” said Reto Brader, CEO, Barix. “Broadcasters and content producers can purchase an affordable, broadcast-quality SRT encoding solution from Barix to acquire and stream audio without any additional investment in technology.”

Introduced at NAB Show 2024, the LX400 codec carries over many of the same features from other Barix devices that long-time customers use for STL, studio-to-studio and other audio networking applications, including multiple contact closures, relays and a USB port for direct-from-device playout. It adds premium quality software codec options including OPUS and AACplus for compressed transport, and PCM to support uncompressed transmission. OPUS delivers lossless quality audio to listeners while using far less bandwidth, ensuring broadcasters the best possible audio quality for compressed transmission.

The LX400 also offer end-to-end delay control for RTP streaming and stream redundancy modes for uninterrupted broadcasting, whether used in a standard STL firmware configuration or within a Reflector EVO service. The latter, exclusively offered through Barix’s longtime partner StreamGuys, offers full-duplex audio contribution and distribution in the cloud for enterprise-level broadcast applications. Other first-time features for broadcast-specific Barix hardware products include absolute end-to-end delay control for RTP streaming, adherence to the latest security standards (HTTPS), and stream redundancy modes for uninterrupted broadcasting. The LX400 also enhances buffering performance for Icecast streams, ensuring constant and consistent playback.

Barix has also added SRT encoding to its MultiCoder M400 device. Introduced last year, the MultiCoder is a unique addition to the Barix legacy of Audio over IP networking as a secure, low-latency IP encoding solution for serving multiple audio formats from one device. The device can encode audio into four formats, including OPUS, AAC+, PCM and 320KB mp3, and send multiple audio RTP/BRTP streams to receiving devices without delay while retaining exceptional quality. SRT encoding is available with the device’s v1.7 update.
