Ignite recruits young AV Pros in SoCal

Connecting AV hopefuls with companies

NSCA’s Ignite program will be heading to southern California May 2 for a day of networking, AV education, and career fair. The aim of the L.A. event is to give college students an introduction and overview of the audiovisual industry.

It will also provide manufacturers and commercial integrators the opportunity to talk with, and possibly recruit, college students from the southern California area. Students from several area universities will be in attendance. AVNation’s own Tim Albright will be moderating a panel of young AV professionals talking about their career path and getting advice for those college students in attendance on how to advance in the audiovisual industry.

On May 2 from 11 am until 2 pm at L.A. Southwest College, NSCA’s Ignite reps will put on the program. During the event, students will be introduced to the broad range of what the audiovisual industry entails. The opportunities within what Ignite identifies as the AV industry include live staging, sports, digital graphical design, creating some of the most memorable experiences these students have had. A free lunch will be provided by In-and-Out Burger.

Ignite is an initiative created by NSCA to encourage those in high school and college with an interest in electronics, arts, and performance to consider AV as a career. There has been much written about how there isn’t a traditional career path for those in the audiovisual industry. There are not a large number of majors in AV. There are several paths to the industry. Whether the student is majoring in electrical engineering, art, performance, communications, or engineering, they already have a start to making an impact on the AV industry.

Ahead of this event, Ignite launched a new website, Igniteyourcareer.org. The site highlights the career paths of several AV professionals. Visitors to the site can navigate through the stories, connect with what Ignite calls an AV ambassador, and check out job postings.

Tim Albright is the founder of AVNation and is the driving force behind the AVNation network. He carries the InfoComm CTS, a B.S. from Greenville College and is pursuing an M.S. in Mass Communications from Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville. When not steering the AVNation ship, Tim has spent his career designing systems for churches both large and small, Fortune 500 companies, and education facilities.
