ResiWeek 416: Smart Home As A Service

The video version of this podcast can be found here.

Burst Your Bubble

While some of us are running around Barcelona during Integrated Systems Europe 2024, we’re still here looking at the biggest stories for the residential space. Joining us this week is Eric Smith from OliverIQ and Jeremy Glowacki of Residential Tech Today.

There have been a staggering amount of layoffs in tech spaces starting from the middle of 2023 and continuing into the current year. Google, Amazon, Microsoft, and Unity are just some of the big names. It’s starting to affect the AV side through Crestron. Is this a bubble popping from a post-pandemic job market? Some kind of ‘restructuring’ to keep profits up? We discuss the impacts of these layoffs in our industry moving forward.

Next, we look at the DIY smart home space through OliverIQ. Smart home automation is commonplace for integrators, but the majority of systems being installed are high-end. OliverIQ seeks to make the ‘smart home as a service’ model available on a wider scale. Since Eric is here, we ask him about what sets OliverIQ apart and what they have in store for the smart home space at large.

Back to the dour news! The 2023 US housing market had its lowest low in 29 years. The data from the National Association of Realtors states that home sales fell 6.2% last year, though the construction space seems to be faring a bit better. We talk about these numbers should affect integrators as they step into the new year.
